What conservation area means
Conservation areas are designated by local planning authorities. The designation protects the area as a whole — its layout, materials, rooflines and trees — not just individual buildings.
A conservation area is "article 2(3) land", which automatically restricts some permitted development rights, including certain roof additions and side extensions.
